An academic website revamp to improve site usability with an updated user interface and mobile friendly optimization.
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (“PLM”) is the first and only chartered and autonomous university funded by a city government, currently graced by about 10,000 graduate and post-graduate students. PLM is a premier university that has consistently garnered a 100% passing rate in licensure examinations, and has produced competent and socially responsible graduates who have contributed to nation-building, since 1967.
PLM wanted to update their website 10 years after it was launched. They required a site that would offer a compelling user experience across multiple devices. Enhancement of the website’s existing design, and optimization of the layout and the user interface was necessary. The project entailed a competitive and modern website for their target audience. We worked closely with the website core team of the university to ensure that everyone was involved in the process.
An advancement the team made was the implementation of Joomla!, the content management system (“CMS”) used to power the website – which facilitated efficient development of access levels for cross-functionalities, streamlined content updating, and scalable platform for future expansion. This allowed various offices to have their own accounts and submit content directly to the website.
The old website had a huge catalogue of sections and sub-sections with major usability issues, and was difficult to use on mobile devices. Part of the strategy was to reorganize navigation items, and create a more user friendly and easy-to-understand menu structure. This was accomplished by streamlining the main navigation, and separating information dedicated for different audiences. The CMS also helped with the ability to share content across different sections of the site, with a “create once, publish everywhere” approach.
THE VISUAL DESIGN
In line with the website redesign is the new usage of brand elements on their digital platforms. This was implemented on the website with the dominance of color white across the site, with accents of gold and blue. In conjunction with the colors, photos representing thecampus and students were pushed for a bolder look.
We aimed for a website that was easy to use, showcased its core elements, and provided needed information to its audiences effectively – and a month after its soft launch, its 500k+ page views do not disappoint.
